What is Aave (AAVE)?

Aave is a decentralized finance platform that allows one to lend, borrow, and earn profit using cryptocurrencies. It is a non-custodial protocol where users can engage as lenders and as borrowers using collateral that acts as a safety net for the lenders.

Built on Ethereum, the protocol operates on smart contracts to make the process automatic where rules are preset to handle the collateral, calculate loan terms, distribute the funds, asses the fees, and many more.

The protocol was launched as ETHLend (LEND) by Stani Kulechov in 2017 and was rebranded to Aave in 2018. The AAVE token was launched in 2020 where the LEND can be migrated at a 1:100 ratio. 

Aave has a unique feature known as a flash loan which allows traders to borrow the currency without any collateral but the loan has to be repaid within the same block. Using this feature the traders can take advantage of price changes in different exchange platforms.

How does Aave work?

Users deposit the digital assets in the liquidity pool which can be used to lend and earn interest in return paid out by the borrower. Aave has flexible interest rates where the user can choose between a stable interest rate that won’t change during the loan or a variable rate, that can change based on market conditions. 

Aave operates on overcollateralisation where the borrower has to secure the collateral worth more than the loan that is taken and the protocol allows the borrower to borrow other currencies up to a certain percentage of the collateral deposited and this whole process is backed by smart contracts.

• Governance Power: The AAVE token holders get a chance to say how things run. They can vote on proposals that direct the protocol.

• Staking: Users stake AAVE tokens in the Safety Module (a pool of AAVE tokens). This is a way to earn rewards while helping to secure the protocol. If there’s ever a shortfall, the staked tokens help cover the losses.

• Reduced Fees: Having AAVE tokens gives discounts to the holders on fees charged by the platform when they borrow or lend the currency. The discount rate varies based on the amount of tokens one holds.                                                                     
  

AAVE, earlier known as ETHLend raised $16.2 million in 2017 through ICO, and the AAVE token was launched in October 2020 for trading at a base price of $52.675.

As of 2024, the token recorded an all-time high price of $661.69 on May 19, 2021, and an all-time low price of $26.02 on November 5, 2020.
