What is BitTorrent (BTT)?

BitTorrent (BTT) is a decentralized file-sharing platform that allows users to store data on the blockchain by paying BTT tokens. It is a later-upgraded version of the popular BitTorrent (Torrent Platform), that allowed users to share files and provided Torrent services. As of 2024, BitTorrent is the largest decentralized p2p communication protocol platform.

The beginning version of the BitTorrent Platform Until 2018 was launched by Bram Cohen, CEO of Chain Network, on January 28, 2001, It was a centralized peer-to-peer platform that allowed users to share files and provided Torrent services. In 2018, the popular blockchain platform called TRON Network purchased BitTorrent for $140 million, and then BitTorrent was launched on the Tron blockchain, making BitTorrent a decentralized platform in February 2019, with its native coin BTT.

After the TRON acquisition of BitTorrent, it developed its services to provide not just file-sharing or torrent services but also premium paid services on its platform that include ad-free browsing and VPN services.

BTT is an inflationary token with a total supply of 990 Trillion, a maximum supply of infinity (unidentified), and a circulating supply of 968T as of 2024.

• 2010 BitTorrent acquired uTorrent, a lightweight client, to expand its user base.
• BitTorrent was purchased by TRON blockchain for $4.5 million in 2018 and uses the TRC-10 standard for BTT tokens.
• In 2013, BitTorrent Sync was launched, which provided decentralized and secure file synchronization.
• In 2015, a live platform called BitTorrent Live was launched. It is a peer-to-peer live streaming protocol that offers efficient distribution of live video content.
• The BitTorrent v2 protocol was launched on May 15, 2017, by Rainberry Inc, formerly known as BitTorrent Inc.
• BTT initially launched on January 28, 2019, on the Binance launchpad and listed on the Binance exchange for the price of $0.00012.
• As BitTorrent doesn't have a central server that may limit bandwidth, downloading is said to be quicker than HTTP ("direct downloading") and FTP.
• Formerly founded by Bram Cohen and present founder Justin Sun, is the founder of the Tron blockchain network. Now, BitTorrent has branched out its services to ad-free browsing and giving VPN capabilities, and BTT tokens are used as a part of transactions.
