Chainlink is a decentralized secured oracle network built on the Ethereum network that acts as a bridge between off-chain data and blockchain environments. It allows smart contracts to access external information securely, facilitating what are known as hybrid smart contracts. Additionally, Chainlink enhances cross-chain interoperability, enabling seamless communication and computations between blockchains.
The main function of the ChainLink network is to bridge two environments on-chain and off-chain, initially built on Ethereum but it's designed to support all smart contracts networks, each piece of the ChainLink system is upgradeable so that every component can be replaced and implemented for better versions.
Introduced in 2017 and Steve Ellis, Ari Juels, and Sergey Nazarov launched this network in 2019. LINK serves as the native cryptocurrency of the Chainlink blockchain network to pay node operators for retrieving off-chain data feeds, formatting data into blockchain readable formats, and off-chain computation.
Chainlink’s objective is to merge on-chain and off-chain worlds. Its architecture is divided into two workflows – on-chain and off-chain.
On-chain architecture involves 3 steps.
1. Oracles are selected based on parameters defined in the Service Level Agreement (SLA) by service purchasers.
2. The off-chain oracles execute the agreement and report results on-chain.
3. The main contract collects the results from oracles which are assessed for validity by a reputation contract. The aggregation contract also calculates the weighted answer and passes the response to the user.
Off-chain Architecture Chainlink consists of a network of nodes connected to the Ethereum network and also other blockchains, working independently to perform requests.
1. Chainlink Core – This node manages software blockchain interactions, schedules tasks, and balances workloads across external services.
2. External Adapters – These tools are customizable and allow developers to focus on business logic without needing to run a node, as node operations can host the adopters.
3. Substack Schemas – Standardized inputs and outputs are crucial for many open-source adapters developed by different creators.
