What is Dogecoin (DOGE):

Dogecoin(DOGE) is the world’s first & most popular meme coin inspired by a meme image of Japanese dog breed Shiba Inu. Launched on December 6, 2013, by Australian Marketer Jackson Palmer and IBM software developer Billy Marcus, Dogecoin has its roots in a 2008 story when Atsuko Sato, A Japanese Kindergarten teacher, rescued a puppy named Kabosu. In 2010, she posted a picture of Kabosu, which ultimately led to the creation of the “Doge” meme.

DOGE is the biggest coin in the meme coin category as per the market cap, having an undefined(infinite) supply. DOGE operates on its own Dogecoin blockchain, which employs Scrypt technology a password-based key derivation function (KDF) technology implementing proof-of-work making it quicker and easier than SHA-256 used in Bitcoin. This blockchain cannot directly interact with smart contracts but can be tied to the Ethereum blockchain to access some decentralized finance(DeFi).

How it works?

Proof of work consensus mechanism is used in the Dogecoin blockchain, similar to Bitcoin. Miners solve mathematical problems to validate transactions and add new blocks to the blockchain. Dogecoin miners earn 10,000 DOGE per block, and each block is created every minute. This rapid blockchain generation helps to maintain a steady supply of DOGE in circulation.

Elon Musk's Contribution to Dogecoin:

• Elon Musk has greatly impacted Dogecoin’s price with his frequent tweets like “DOGE”, “Dogecoin is the people's crypto”, “no highs, no lows, only Doge"and public statements, The first tweet in December 2020 caused a 20% price spike and during his May 2021, Saturday Night Live appearance, Dogecoin’s value fell by nearly 30%. 

• In January 2021, attention from Reddit users, Elon Musk and the Gamestop short squeeze, resulting in $0.07 of Dogecoin over 800% growth in 24 hours.

• On December 14, 2021, Tesla merchandise was purchased using Dogecoin which spiked more than 20% after that Elon Musk tweet.

• In 2022, a $258 billion lawsuit against Musk allegedly inflated Dogecoin’s price.

• In April 2023, Elon Musk temporarily changed the logo on the Twitter app to a Doge logo.

• Reddit and Twitter communities help trade tangible items in exchange for Dogecoin, where users frequently share updates on cryptocurrency information. Dogetipbot was the tip given to users for reading posts on Reddit and Twitter.

• On December 19, 2013, Dogecoin's value rose from $0.00026-$0.00095/DOGE, growth was nearly 300% in 72 hours due to the volume of billions of dogecoins per day.

• Major theft or hack occurred, losing millions of dogecoins from the online cryptocurrency Dogewallet on December 25, 2013. Due to this “Save DOGEMAS” community was created to help donate coins to those who incurred losses.

• In January 2014, the Dogecoin community raised $50,000 for the Winter Olympics.

• In 2014, Doge for Water, a US$30,000 fund was raised to build the Tana River basin, in Kenya.

• In March 2014, the Doge community raised about US$55,000 for the NASCAR Cup series. 

• Dogecoin reached a high of $0.017 on January 7, 2018, raising its market cap to nearly $2 billion.

• TikTok trend encouraged to buy Dogecoins to the users, with the target of reaching $1/Dogecoin in July 2020.
