What is Filecoin (FIL)?

Filecoin (FIL) is a decentralized digital storage system that aims to address the limitations of traditional data storage services such as data privacy controls, high cost, and centralization. FIL token is the cryptocurrency of the Filecoin system.

The internet has a big problem: centralization and Filecoin is about giving people back control of their data. Instead of trusting a single company like Google or Amazon to keep the data safe, information is stored across multiple locations—spread out, decentralized, and far more secure.

Juan Benet introduced the idea of Filecoin in 2014. The project was launched in 2017 and developed by Protocol Labs. The system is built on the Interplanetary File System (IPFS), which is like a supercharged version of the Internet’s traditional file-sharing system. 

IPFS provides a decentralized cloud marketplace allowing users to buy and sell storage services. Filecoin adds a crucial layer to this by introducing an economic incentive: participants earn FIL tokens for offering storage space or retrieving data for others.

Filecoin is part of a bigger push to make the web more open and free, giving control over data in ways that were hard to imagine a few years ago. It’s not just about storage—it’s about freedom and flexibility.

How does Filecoin work?

The Filecoin system includes three participants: Clients, Storage miners, and Retrieval miners. 

Clients pay storage miners to keep their data safe; when someone needs their data back, retrieval miners step in. The miners are getting paid in FIL tokens to store, retrieve, and deliver the data. Everything is done on an open market, so storage prices vary based on what’s available.

Miners have to prove they’re storing your data through Proof-of-Replication (PoRep) and Proof-of-Spacetime (PoSt) a way to ensure they’re doing what they promised.

Filecoin (FIL) Tokens

FIL token is the digital currency that powers the Filecoin project and its processes. Users pay to buy and retrieve the storage services using FIL tokens and the storage miners earn rewards in FIL tokens for providing storage services encouraging them to provide more storage space.

The token was launched through ICO in 2017 raising $200 million from investors and it started trading in the same year at an initial price of $11.47.

As of 2024, the token recorded an all-time high of $237.24 on April 1, 2021, and an all-time low of $1.83 on August 30, 2019.

When FIL finally hit the market in late 2017, it opened at $11.47, reflecting the massive hype surrounding the project. The token later surged to its all-time high of $237.24 in April 2021, riding the broader DeFi and Web3 storage narrative before cooling off significantly. From a $120K bet in 2014 to a $200M+ fundraise in 2017.
