What is Stellar (XLM)?

Stellar (XLM) is a blockchain network that connects banks, payment systems, and people to transfer money quickly at a lower cost than traditional methods. Its main goal is to make global transactions easier and more affordable for everyone, especially in places where financial services are limited.

Lumens (XLM) is the currency that fuels the Stellar project. It is a decentralized exchange and marketplace that allows users to send, buy, and manage currencies. With Stellar, the sender transfers funds in their local currency, and the receiver on the other side of the world receives it in their currency.

Co-founded by Jed McCaleb, CTO of Stellar Development Foundation and a co-founder of Ripple, along with Joyce Kim on July 31, 2014. The Stellar Development Foundation is a non-profit organization that manages the Stellar project and was launched in collaboration with Stripe, a multinational financial services company.  Stripe invested $3 million in the project as seed funding; out of $100 million Stellars, the company received $2 million stellar in return.

The project has integrated with Deloitte to build Deloitte Digital Bank, an application to facilitate cross-border transactions, and has partnered with IBM, KlickEx, SureRemit, the Ministry of Digital Transformation Ukraine, and many more.

The Stellar Development Foundation initially had a maximum supply capped at 100 million Stellar. In 2019, half of the stellar coins out of 100 million were burned to reduce the supply in the market. This caused a short-term spike in the price of the coins. 

How does Stellar work? 

Stellar uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP) to validate the transactions on the blockchain quickly and efficiently without consuming much energy.

The blockchain consists of nodes, which are interconnected, and decentralized. The nodes each acting independently sync with each other to agree upon a transaction, ensuring that each node has the same record of transactions and then processes the transactions.

Stellar (XLM) Coin History

XLM, called Lumens, is a digital currency of the Stellar project. The coin is used to pay for a transaction fee (0.00001 XLM per transaction) and cross-border transactions that allow the sender to transfer funds in their local currency that will be converted into Lumens, upon which they are converted into the receiver's local currency. This process takes a few seconds to complete the transaction.

The coin was launched through ICO, raising $5.01 million in funds at a base price of around $0.002373. In 2014, Mercado Bitcoin, the first Brazilian Bitcoin exchange, published it would use stellar blockchain technology to improve its transaction process.

As of 2024, the coin recorded an all-time high price of $0.9381 on January 4, 2018, and an all-time low price of $0.001227 on November 19, 2014.
