Arbitrum (ARB) is a layer-2 Ethereum solution created to make faster, more scalable, and private transactions. Ethereum platform takes a while to process the transactions, and the fees are painfully high. Arbitrum steps in to overcome these issues, improving the user experience without sacrificing the security Ethereum is known for.
ARB is the token that fuels the Arbitrum platform. The project uses a technology called optimistic rollups for processing the transactions. These transactions are recorded on Ethereum’s main chain, but they’re executed on Arbitrum.
Developers are allowed to run their existing Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) contracts on Arbitrum which means they don’t have to rewrite their code or make major adjustments. This setup significantly reduces the strain on Ethereum’s resources, while still maintaining accuracy and security.
On March 16, 2023, Arbitrum announced its ARB airdrop. A significant 12.75% of the total ARB supply was allocated to early users and DAOs. Users were selected based on their engagement with the network before March 1, 2023, and the token was officially launched on March 23, 2023, during the token launch event.
Offchain Labs, a development company based in New York developed Arbitrum. the company is led by Ed Felten, a professor at Princeton University, along with Steven Goldfeder and Harry Kalodner, who are both deeply involved in blockchain research.
OffChain Labs was founded in 2018 by Ed Felten, Steven Goldfeder, and Harry Kalodner to create solutions for scaling Ethereum. The first solution they announced is called Arbitrum, which was announced on 15 April 2019. Its testnet became operational in February 2020, and by October 2020 anyone could use it. In May 2021, the platform was moved to mainnet to serve developers.
Arbitrum One was officially launched on August 31, 2021, opening the network to users and protocols for interaction. Within a short time, major protocols such as Uniswap, Curve, Aave, and Sushi deployed onto Arbitrum One. Since the launch of Arbitrum, it has been constantly getting various updates and improvements.
Arbitrum is based on a technology known as Optimistic Rollup, where transactions are bundled together to scale up the process. The term optimistic means that the project assumes transactions are valid by default. It only checks them when someone raises a red flag. If a user thinks a transaction is suspicious, they can challenge it.
This keeps things moving quickly and efficiently, as most transactions don’t need to be verified right away. Even though transactions happen off the main chain, Arbitrum relies on Ethereum’s security.
ARB is the cryptocurrency of the Arbitrum blockchain. The token is used for governance purposes where the holders of ARB have a say in the future of the platform. They vote on proposals and changes, helping to shape the direction of Arbitrum.
